Kodachadri hill is located in Shimoga district, Karnataka. It is part of Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary. This is the highest peak in Shimoga district having a height of 1343 meters above sea level. This is a 13 kilometers hike to the peak encompassing all other milestone points. It is known for its lush green hills covered with rocks and boulders. The complete trek takes about 5-6 hours. The Kodachadri trek takes you through vast meadows, waterfalls, paddy fields, steep rock passageways along with a beautiful sunset point. There is also a vast variety of fauna available ranging from peacocks to primates.
To begin with, you must take permission from the forest department. There is an option of going through jeep trek or foot trek. Jeep trek can cost approximately ₹2500 per person. But if you want to embrace nature then a foot trek is the correct option to choose. The perfect route to trek this hill is via 3 milestones i.e, the first one being Hidlumane trek which is of 6.5 kilometers. Then to Battaramane trek, which is 3 kilometers. After this you can reach Kodachadri Peak from the base, which is 2 kilometers. There is also another way of trekking, which is by using the trekking trail instead of taking the adventurous route of Hidlumane waterfalls.
Things to Carry
There are no shops further away in the trek, so you must take your own food and water. But no need to worry about water as the waterfalls and pristine springs will come into rescue! Do not carry any plastic material into the forest so as to keep the forest clean and green. If you carry any plastic item into the forest, then you must pay for it to the official. However, if you bring back the plastic items that you had carried then the money would be refunded. Do take your trekking pole along inorder to get a good hold while trekking. It is advisable to wear waterproof shoes along with full sleeves in order to protect your body from forest mosquitoes.
Into the Hidlumane
While you are passing through Hidlumane, you will come across vast paddy fields along with narrow water streams. Paddy fields are unique to the place as it shows the blend of nature with the agricultural activities. There are also grasslands covered all over while moving towards the waterfalls. Here you can take some rest to restore your energy. This is most important as future trekking is a bit adventurous and tricky. There are many slippery rocks in the midst of spring where you must be careful. It is a dense forest where you can listen to the music of nature. There are many leeches all along the way, so be careful with them. The rocks will then lead you to the Hidlumane waterfalls. It is the most fascinating moment of all. Here the pothole is very huge that is formed by the waterfalls. The cascade of the waterfalls is huge and the maximum amount of water will fill you with excitement. The best time to visit this place is post-monsoon as it offers you with huge water. Reaching this place will make you forget the hard journey you did prior to this.
On the way to Battaramane
This waterfall will then take to the next trek called Battaramane. It is also known as IB Office. Here you can take a break for a while for lunch. Post-lunch, you can continue trekking where you come across steep slopes. You must walk along the steep rocks adjoining the slopes. Here you can also view gullies and ravines formed due to heavy rains. So here also you can expect leeches because of heavy rain.

Now is the time you will be heading towards Kodachadri Hill, which is the 13 highest peak in Karnataka. So this is a 2 kilometers trek from Battaramane. The trek here is a bit easy as compared to Hidlumane trek. However, the slope slowly rises as one ascends towards the peak. The summit invites you with a beautiful sunset view all encompassing with the evening clouds. This is the place where one realizes the true meaning of inner self and peace.
