He has an older sister, Kate (born 1984). His paternal grandfather, Ronan O’Brien, was from County Sligo in Ireland; his maternal grandparents were from County Cork.
O’Brien began taking acting classes at the age of six and appeared in several local theater productions in Southern California with his father’s help. His parents were supportive of his interest in acting but were doubtful about whether he would be able to make a living doing it.

He currently stars on the Netflix series The Get Down (2016-2017). He also stars in the film Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2017) and its sequel, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (2015), as Thomas.
